This quarterly summary is developed to help you to stay up-to-date with events involving the IFRS® Foundation's Asia-Oceania office (AO office) in Tokyo, Japan—including workshops, conferences, discussions and consultations.

8/9/17: Joint IFRS Foundation and MASB 2017 IFRS Regional Conference—Kuala Lumpur

On 8 September, the Joint IFRS Foundation and MASB 2017 IFRS Regional Conference was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and International Accounting Standards Board (Board) Member Mary Tokar, Education Director Matt Tilling and Senior Technical Manager Kathryn Donkersley gave updates on the Board's technical activities to the 200 attendees. AO office Director Mitsuhiro Takemura also visited Kuala Lumpur to meet key stakeholders in the region, including MASB, the Securities Commission of Malaysia and the IOSCO Asia Pacific Hub, confirming the Foundation's ongoing cooperation with those stakeholders.

Prior to the IFRS Regional Conference in Kuala Lumpur, the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants invited Mary Tokar and Kathryn Donkersley to Tokyo to participate in a career development seminar and discuss the Board’s technical activities.


4/9/17: The 12th IFRS Digital Reporting Workshop

On 4 September, the 12th IFRS Digital Reporting Workshop was held at the AO office, focusing on the issue of excessive aggregation of line items in financial statements. The workshop gathered preparers, auditors and users of financial statements to discuss the usability of IFRS financial statements in a digital format. Board Member Takatsugu Ochi and AO office Director Mitsuhiro Takemura attended.


30/8/17-8/9/17: Investor outreach in the Asia-Oceania region

From 30 August to 8 September, the IFRS Foundation’s Head of Investor Engagement Fred Nieto visited Tokyo, Hong Kong and Beijing to meet local investors and analysts about the practical implications of recently issued IFRS Standards, particularly focusing on IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts. During the trip he met the Japanese members of the Board's Investors in Financial Reporting programme. He also discussed the Board's consultative documents that were open for comment.

These meetings are a key part of the Foundation's outreach activities with the investor community, and also support the strategic goal of collaborating with national standard-setters.


23/8/17: Exchange of views with Japanese preparers

On 23 August, Board Member Takatsugu Ochi and AO office Director Mitsuhiro Takemura attended the meeting of the Committee on Finance and Accounting of Keidanren, held at the Keidanren Kaikan Building. Topics discussed included goodwill accounting and the Primary Financial Statements project.
