Bill Coen is the Secretary General of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and also chairs the Basel Committee’s Policy Development Group, its Corporate Governance Task Force and the Coherence and Calibration Task Force.
The Basel Committee is the global standard-setter for banks and provides a forum for regular cooperation on banking supervisory matters. The Committee is best-known for its international standards on capital adequacy and liquidity; the Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision; and the Concordat on cross-border banking supervision. The Basel Committee has a deep interest in accounting issues because they form the basis of financial reporting.
Prior to his appointment in April 2014, Bill had served as Deputy Secretary General since 2007. Before joining the Basel Committee’s Secretariat in 1999, he worked for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington DC, with a variety of responsibilities during his career in areas related to banking policy, supervision and licensing.
Bill is a native of New York City and received his Master of Business Administration degree from Fordham University (1991) and Bachelor of Science degree from Manhattan College (1984).
